Grafton, Vermont, is home to one of New England's true treasures: The Old
Tavern at Grafton. If ever there were a place to live the poet's words, it is
The Old Tavern. The Old Tavern has a heritage that goes back almost as far as
our country's; it first opened only 12 years after America's independence.
The rich lineage and unspoiled colonial beauty of The Old Tavern are evident
everywhere in Grafton.
When you come to The Old Tavern, you truly step into yesteryear. With its
hand-hewn beams, the rich patinas of wide pine flooring, pewter and brass,
and its understated décor, The Old Tavern looks very much like it did in the
old days, when it accommodated the likes of Daniel Webster, Oliver Wendell
Holmes, Ulysses S. Grant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rudyard
Kipling, and Henry David Thoreau.
The Old Tavern was restored by the Windham Foundation in 1965 with painstaking
historical accuracy. Naturally, modern plumbing and heating were added, along
with other safety and convenience features. But for the most part, these
improvements are hidden from the eye and The Old tavern boasts the look that
made it a favorite stop on the Boston-Montreal stagecoach runs.
Although The Old Tavern offers every amenity necessary to your comfort, you
won't find a telephone or a TV set in your room (we do have them, but located
well out of sight and sound). The reason for this is simple. People come to
Grafton and The Old Tavern to find what might be the two rarest commodities
in today's unsettled world: peace and quiet. You may spend your time here
relaxing in a world that is untroubled and calm, walking through woods marked
by stone walls, reading without disturbance, playing cards, or just rocking
on the porch with friends - old and new. However, your stay at The Old Tavern
needn't be passive. If you prefer, there are a range of more vigorous activities
to choose from. Tennis, swimming (in our own natural pond), fly-fishing, platform
tennis (available year-round), bicycling, and of course, skiing. With our own
stable, guests now have the option of bringing their own horses to The Old
Tavern.
The Windham Foundation has also restored many of the town's homes with the same
impeccable detail found at The Old Tavern. The village contains some of the finest
examples of eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture in Vermont. One might
expect to find horse and carriage the only vehicle on the streets of Grafton. But
make no mistake - Grafton is far from a "museum" town. It is a living, working
community. There is a general store, a gallery, many shops, and even a historical
museum. While in town, you can visit the Grafton Village Cheese Company.
The Old Tavern has 35 rooms in the Main Tavern building, the Windham and Homestead
cottages. There are six guest houses as well, sleeping from eight to fourteen
people each (most guest houses feature full kitchens). Antique furnishings
throughout The Old Tavern, the cottages and guest quarters contribute to their
substantial charm; each room is different - uniquely appointed to create a
distinct personality. Private rooms are also available in The Old Tavern for
business meetings, or private gatherings for up to 40 people.
The Dining Room at The Old Tavern offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily,
featuring traditional Anew England fare prepared with master culinary skill and
served with unobtrusive grace.
Small wonder then, that the New York Times has called The Old Tavern "the choicest
inn of all." If our unspoiled life of quiet pleasures appeals to you, be sure to
plan in advance. With the main tavern lodging, cottages and guest houses, we can
accommodate but 140 guests.
One visit and you will understand why we are "New England's Most Elegant Little
Inn."
The Old Tavern at Grafton is a paragon of understated New England charm. If ever
there were a Tavern - and a town - that represented the essence of picture-book
New England, it is here at Grafton.
